Local Attractions

Just 30 miles South of Belfast, and 90 miles North of Dublin, the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa is the perfect base for midweek and weekend breaks in Northern Ireland. A five minute walk from the hotel brings you to the bustling resort town of Newcastle, picturesquely situated between mountains and a sweeping strand. The Mountains of Mourne are on our doorstep and are a fantastic walking and climbing experience.

Take time to discover the richness of some of the many local attractions. View stately homes set in fabulous gardens, hike mountain trails, explore dense woodlands, or walk for miles along the smooth sands of Newcastle’s famous beach. Discover country pubs tucked amid mountain villages, try your hand at fishing, horse riding or sailing – the Slieve Donard hotel in Down is really at the centre of it all.

There is a wide range of must see sights in the area, and highlights that our staff at the Slieve Donard are sure to recommend include the Silent Valley, a magnificent reservoir cradled in the Mourne Mountains. Tollymore Forest Park is a short drive away and is simply breathtaking, as are Castlewellan Country Park and Murlough Bay Nature Reserve, with its miles of wooded walks. Less than ten miles away lie the delights of Downpatrick, home to St Patrick’s Visitor Centre and Grave, a World Christian Heritage Site.
