Golf Hotel of the Year - The Slieve Donard Resort and Spa
The Slieve Donard Resort and Spa, in Newcastle County Down, has just been awarded one of Ireland's most prestigious Golf accolades. It was named by the Ireland Golf Tour Operators Association (IGTOA) as Golf Hotel of the Year for 2006.
The award was presented by Marty Carr of Carr Golf and Corporate Travel, and Chairman of the IGTOA, to Dr. Billy Hastings, CBE, Chairman of the Hastings Hotels Group at the annual IGTOA dinner which took place this year in the Radisson SAS Hotel in Sligo.
Dr. Hastings said he was absolutely delighted to receive the award, and complimented John Toner, the Hotel's Director and Genreal Manager, and Tom Cotter, Sales and Marketing Manager who have both worked tirelessly to bring new golfers to Northern Ireland, to courses like Ardglas and other great links courses, but particularly to Royal County Down and Slieve Donard Resort and Spa, right next door.
The Slieve Donard is undergoing a £15m redevelopment with the creation of a new ESPA Spa, and 60 new Resort bedrooms. The Spa will be one of ESPA's largest projects in the UK and Ireland. The building will be complete in July, in time for the Ryder Cup this year and the Walker Cup in 2007.
The Hotel has been re-branded the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa, and will be one of the best resort properties and destination spas available in Ireland.
Other awards included Golf course of the year which went to Doonbeg, and the Jerry Dunworth award for outstanding contribution to Irish Golf which went to Padraig o' hUginn who spearheaded the delegation which secured the Ryder Cup for Ireland later this year.
The Golf Hotel of the year was awarded to the Slieve Donard, 'in consideration of the standards of excellence achieved within an industry which constantly sets new goals for attaining total customer satisfaction'. The IGTOA was established in 1996 to represent the interests of Irish Based Golf Tour operators.
