Slieve Donard Resort and Spa prepares to open doors on £15million re-development
The Slieve Donard Resort and Spa, Newcastle, is putting the final touches to an 18 month, and £15million, project which, when it opens in early September, will equate to 70,000 sq ft of total and unabridged luxury.
The development sees the addition of 60 new enormous and superbly appointed resort bedrooms, to give a total of 175, as well as a 16 treatment room spa and leisure facility, one of the largest and probably the most highly specified on the island of Ireland.
The Spa, which has been designed with the help of ESPA, the world renowned spa company famous for it's extensive treatment menu, product range and spa design, will rival any Spa in Europe today. Situated on two floors and with stunning views across the Irish Sea and the Mourne Mountains, there are few places better to relax and unwind
As well as a suite of Spa therapies, designed to balance mind, body and soul, the extensive leisure and exercise facilities will include a 20 metre pool, vitality pool and thermal heat experiences, fitness suite with top of the range cardio vascular and resistance machines and luxuriously appointed changing rooms.
With 'opening day' just weeks away, Dr Billy Hastings, Chairman of Hastings Hotels Group, commented on the expansion of the hotel: "The Slieve Donard has stood on this spot at the foot of the Mourne Mountains for more than 100 years - the Victorian architecture is outstanding, and it was very important for us to complement and maintain the original features in any changes that we made to the hotel.
Guests and visitors can only agree that the historical characteristics have been more than preserved in their original glory."
John Toner, a native of Newcastle and Director at the Slieve Donard, managed the development and oversaw the construction and design team: "The completion of the new development is extremely timely as we will be up and running in time for the Ryder Cup, which tees off September 22nd. The tournament presents a major opportunity for international golf business to the hotel with our range of golf packages, including the very popular 'heli-golf' ".

The £15million spent on the Slieve Donard Resort and Spa development coincides with major investments at both Royal County Down Golf Club and by the District Council in Newcastle towards the "new look" promenade facilities of the area. In total £25 million will be spent on this area over a five year period, to help affirm Newcastle's position as the premier destination resort in Northern Ireland.
