Training Programmes

All of the Hastings Hotels Training programmes are delivered using a variety of methods including, one to one discussion, group discussion, role play, on-the-job and off-the-job, exercises, lectures and workshops, and with the use of both internal and external trainers.

Trainee Management Programme

Duration

This is a 2 year programme. The first 18 months are spent gaining expertise and knowledge in all operational areas, together with the development of the necessary leadership and management skills. In the final six months you can chose which function you want to specialise in, where you will gain the in-depth experience necessary to take on a management role.

Outline of Programme

Each Trainee will follow a structured training plan, with a placement at each of our six hotels and a specialist manager assigned to over see each placement. At the end of each placement, a joint assessment will be carried out with the Trainee by the Placement Manager and the Group HR Manager.

Each placement will enable the Trainee to experience different management styles and operations.

The programme will focus on the main operational departments – Bars, Restaurant, Conference and Banqueting, Reception and Conceirge Services and Housekeeping.

During each placement, you will gain operational experience, taking full responsibility for the department by the end of the placement.

Built into the first 18 months are a number of specific training events, covering Leadership, Communication, Customer Service and Managing Performance, as well as more practical subjects covering First Aid, Risk Management and Train the Trainer.

Our Trainee Managers will also complete short placements in Kitchen and Leisure, along with the various support functions.

Progress and Appraisal

During the course of each placement your progress and development will be assessed by your Placement Manager and the Group HR Manager. Each of the individual assessments will guide you towards achieving your goal.

Each Trainee is assigned an experienced mentor to help guide and advise them throughout the programme. The Group HR Manager will oversee the progress of all trainees and is also available to assist trainees to get the most from the programme.

Graduation

Upon successful completion of the programme, trainees will be invited to attend a ‘Graduation’ event.

After the Programme

As you near the end of the programme, interviews will be arranged with one or more of the General Managers of hotels where there are entry level managerial positions available.

Once established in the management team, future progression and development will depend entirely on merit and individual performance.

During annual performance reviews, your performance and achievements will be reviewed and an assessment made of your skills and behaviours. From this, we are able to offer guidance on how strengths might be utilised and weaknesses worked upon.

Throughout the group there are many examples of staff who have climbed the hotels’ career ladder, proving that Hastings Hotels group produces its own opportunities.

Qualifications

Candidates must be able to demonstrate high levels of numeracy and literacy (to GCSE ‘A’ Grade or equivalent) and have a passion for the Hospitality Industry. In addition you will be required to demonstrate confidence, energy, willingness to learn, personal drive, flexibility, the ability to make decisions and very strong customer service orientation.
